Our Forest School is AMAZING!
A Forest School is a long term programme within a natural space, led by a qualified leader. They focus on developing confidence, problem-solving skills, independence, personal and social skills through learner led, nature-based learning. Challenges might include building a shelter, lighting a fire, going through an obstacle course, using tools to make things and much more! Lots of children also enjoy getting muddy!
Who are our Forest School leaders?
The Forest School dynamos and qualified Forest School leaders at Highgate are Miss Hocking and Mrs Garfoot-White. (Mrs Nash helps to oversee our Forest School provision.) The FS leaders were asked to explain why they love leading the Forest School sessions so much and this is what they said:
‘I love being a Forest School leader for so many reasons!
It’s amazing to see the children learn, explore and interact outside and watch them achieve (especially those who find some academic subjects a struggle).
To see how they grow in personal skills such as confidence and resilience is both rewarding and exciting.’
‘For me, Forest School is about showing children that school is not all about what you can learn in a classroom but what being outdoors can teach you about yourself.
You are strong enough to climb that tree! You are brave enough to cut the branch! You are capable of lighting the fire!
Every child shows resilience, determination, perseverance and with this, we get to watch the children grow into more confident versions of themselves. Just a few reasons why I love Forest School.’
