On the back of the hard work the School Council have put in to promote anti-bullying and character education, Highgate successfully applied to become a pilot school (working with 3 other Leicestershire schools and 5 Leicester City schools) for the No Outsiders in Our Schools project. This project promotes equality through the use of picture books throughout the school. School Councillors have created an action plan of how they want to implement this project in our school to continue to drive forward improvements for the lives of everyone at Highgate, regardless of race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, gender reassignment, disability, age or belief. We look forward to sharing more with you soon.
July 2017 – Speaker’s School Council Award
In July 2017, we were highly commended by the Speaker’s School Council Award for the second year running for the hard work our School Council have put in to their project work. This time it was for their efforts in leading the anti-bullying work. In July 2016, the School Council were commended for their Character Education work around the book “Pig of Happiness” that led the school to begin to change the culture of the school.
June 2017 – Enhanced Healthy Schools Award
In June 2017, the school was accredited Enhanced Healthy Schools Status for two of the projects they had run over the year; Healthy Eating (for the work they had done to achieve Food for Life) and Emotional Well-Being (for the work they had done to develop both Character Education and Beyond Bullying).
June 2017 – Beyond Bullying Award
In June 2017, the chair and vice chair of our School Council were invited to attend The National Space Centre in Leicester to be presented with the Beyond Bullying Award. This celebrated the amazing work that the children of the School Council led throughout 2016 and 2017. Not only have they created a child-friendly version of the policy and raised awareness of tackling anti-bullying through the creation of displays and writing a song for the whole school to learn, they have documented evidence to support how well the school supports those who have had difficulties and have been a shining example to their fellow peers. Thank you particularly to Maggie and Cein.
March 2017 – Soil Association Food For Life Bronze Award
In March 2017, the school was accredited with the Food For Life (Bronze) Award from the Soil Association. This was thanks to the hard work and effort of a team of people led by Mrs Allen and Miss Kunne. Not only have they ensured our delicious school dinners meet the high standard required, they have also galvanised the food technology and science curriculum and engaged the children in entrepreneurialism by selling the produce they have made at Food Fairs. This has redeemed the cost of production and welcomed in parents and the community at the same time. Pupils offered their voice as part of a specially commissioned group of children who became our School Nutrition Action Group (SNAG).
Investors in People – Generation 6 – November 2016
In November 2016 Highgate Primary School was the first school in the Midlands region to be awarded Investors in People as part of the 6th Generation of this award. Gaining accreditation at the “Developed” stage for supporting and valuing the staff at all levels, they are currently developing the leadership skills of a range of staff who are rising to the challenge to make the school an even better place to learn and work.
